When the pore size of common filters get too small, water
will not pass through in any desirable amount unless you
use 
pressure
to force it through the filter. Then, when using pressure
the filter will eventually clog, especially in a very dirty
water source - and very clog up, sometimes very quickly.
Many hikers know the problems.
The membrane has a molecular-weight cutoff of 400...tight
enough to reject even viral DNA fragments in the contaminated
water source. This forward osmosis system holds many advantages
over complex Reverse Osmosis systems that use hydraulic
pressure to drive water through a filter by using natural
osmotic processes that passively draw water through the
membrane filter.
The result is pure fluids without the cost, fuel requirement,

Diabetics may / may not be able to use this filter because
it does make the water sweet with the sugar. This is good
