BriteLyt Multi-Fuel
Lanterns, Stoves, & Petromax Lanterns
Summary Statement: Utilizing a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest rating possible, the BriteLyt Fuel Lanterns are recognized as maintaining a consumer product safety rating of: 9.6 As detailed in the Liquid Fuel Lantern, Product Safety Report, I have witnessed the operational testing of the BriteLyt, Inc. multi-fuel lanterns in review of theyre safety variables. Testing was performed on BriteLyt, Inc. premises as well as at the National Safety Information Exchange, Inc. home offices. The NSIE, Inc. looked carefully at the added safety features of the offered multi-fuel lanterns. The following is found to be true. Identified BriteLyt Multi-Fuel lanterns are found to incorporate safety features and functions not found on other multi-fuel lanterns available through other manufactures. Heat Plate: The BriteLyt, Inc. lanterns are designed and fitted with a patented lantern Heat Plate (part #126) which has demonstrated its effectiveness at reducing the probability of fire, explosion, injury or death to consumers. The Heat Plate was tested and found effective in minimizing the likelihood of fire and heat being directed down into a lantern in the event of a lantern mantle failure. Lantern Pump Assembly: BriteLyt has provided end users with an option to remove a factory installed fuel cell hand pump with a new patented hand pump unit incorporating O Rings on its pump piston. This slight modification to the pumping assembly has been shown to decreased resistance in the pumping operation, which is believed to reduce the likelihood of injury to an operators hand or wrist during use. EZ-Pump Valve & Pressure Release: BriteLyt, Inc. offers to end users a patented pump and pressure release valve unit which allows users an option of using an external pumping mechanism such as hand/foot pump or controlled CO2 charged pressure device. The EZ-Pump Valve seems to minimize the probability of hand or wrist injury from using the standard hand pump on a lanterns fuel cell. The alternate Pump Valve with Pressure Release provides added safety to any user who chooses to add pressure to a lantern from either a hand/foot pump or controlled CO2 charge. The incorporated release valve is calibrated and set to release pressure being directed into the lanterns fuel cell in the unlikely event that pressure be found to be greater than the allowable pressure to the fuel cell walls. Methanol Fuel: Although not a formal part of this report, it should be noted that BriteLyt, Inc. has demonstrated an environmentally sound practice of seeking alternative fuels for use with lantern manufacturing. The engineering staff at BriteLyt, Inc. has worked with other professionals in the field of Bio-Mass fuels focusing on the recovery, processing and utilization of bi-products from used vegetable oils in the form of Methanol. Methanol is believed to be one of the safest forms of biodegradable fuel sources possible. Independent studies demonstrating the overall benefit and environmentally sound use of such fuels in lantern and fuel-burning equipment is on going. Investigator: Kenneth J. Skelly is a Safety Engineer with the National Safety Information Exchange, Inc. He maintains an undergraduate degree in Behavioral Science & Psychology a Masters Degree in Occupational Safety & Health Engineering and advanced graduate work in System Safety Engineering from the University of Southern California. He is a Registered Environmental Assessor and has worked as a Safety Engineer with The National Aeronautics & Space Administration for nearly twenty years.
